Well tonight I was going write about the history of one particular rug pattern, Cape May. . .but after this morning, it will wait until later in the week! (Sorry Amzi)
This morning at approximately 10:22 am at magnitude 4.1 or 3.8 (both reported) off the coast of York Harbor, about 8 miles from where we live now. Now for those of us on the East Coast, this is something we have never to hardly experienced, or even thought of. Sitting in the office and having the floor rumble, the sound of something like a jet plane crashing and watching certain items roll off my desk was a first for me.
The thought process when you don’t know what something is but know something is wrong–Do we get the employees out of the building? Is it the furnace (which we just had cleaned last week)? Is outside safe? OMG what happened at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard? Did one nuclear submarine finally blow? (Always a personal fear of mine living less then 20 miles from the Shipyard)
One employee said “I think a plane went down” Another said “What are the cats doing upstairs?” “Are they blasting at Pike’s (gravel pit)?
Then comes the check down–nothing suspect outside, the furnace did not blow, and then go to Facebook and look at the Well’s Maine page—Earthquake! Never crossed my mind.
Now to check on the furbabies–funny thing Bella (my 21 year old Maine Coon) was acting funny this morning but did not know why, the boys–Max, Ollie and Tucker were hiding under the hassock and dining table. Quite shaken by the noise.
Less then 15 minutes later all returned to normal, the day again took on its normal pace but still listening to see if more were coming. Not a comfortable feeling. A new found respect for those who live in earthquake zones with much higher magnitude earthquakes.
Then after the day was over and a lot of discussion, time for something comforting or reassuring. The UPS man delivered just that—the large antique, hand blown, mica embellished glass bell in pale pink. This ornament from my childhood was broken or misplaced or sold when my parents downsized. The bell was given to my mother for my First Christmas by one of her long time customers at the Dover Trust Bank. It was always carefully hung or should I say secured, the story told of how it came to us and always a prominent place on the Christmas Tree. I can close my eyes and still see it.
Well for over 4 years I have had an automatic search on Ebay, Etsy, Replacements Ltd. and so on. Then it appeared in one of my Ebay searches! Bought and paid for immediately. . .
Little things, fond memories and a sense of comfort all in a pale pink glass bell! Perfect timing.
Hope everyone is safe, warm and well!
PS There will be a new dyed wool–Shake, Rattle & Roll
